WELCOME PHILIPPA!

Renowned Shakespearean joins NapaShakes Team

NapaShakes is thrilled to welcome author and Shakespeare scholar Philippa Kelly as our new director of Dramaturgy and Audience Outreach. She currently serves as Resident Dramaturg for the California Shakespeare Theater, and has also worked as production dramaturg for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and Word for Word.
Philippa will offer engaging writings and lectures, help us to select works for our seasons, create new compilations and adaptations for our solo shows — and much more!
Dr. Kelly was jointly awarded a Bly Award for Innovation in Dramaturgy from the Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of America in 2014. Her work has been supported by many other foundations and organizations, including the Fulbright and Rockefeller Foundations, the Walter and Eliza Hall Foundation, and the Commonwealth Awards. Besides her work for Cal Shakes, she currently teaches with the UC Berkeley Osher Institute, serves annually in the selection of the Australian Endeavour Awards, and travels to Saudi Arabia to work with women in the Higher Education sector. At Cal Shakes she runs a year-round performance blog entitled Ask Philippa. She publishes regularly on Shakespeare in books, journals, magazines and on-line discussion media.
Philippa’s most recent book, The King and I, is a personal meditation on contemporary Australian life through the prism of King Lear.
She is thrilled to be joining Napa Shakes in the capacity of Dramaturg and Audience Enrichment.
