William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night directed by Emma Rice
At the Cameo Cinema in St. Helena

Tickets $25 at the Cameo Box Office
For more information, visit our TICKETS PAGE

On March 10, 2019 at 1 pm, NapaShakes will present another world-premiere cinema screening from London’s Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre: Emma Rice’s music-filled production of Twelfth Night. The screening will be presented at St Helena’s historic Cameo Cinema in digital HD and Dolby Atmos surround sound, recreating the experience of being a Groundling in the “Wooden O” of Shakespeare’s Globe. This is the second premiere cinema screening from the Globe that NapaShakes has presented at the Cameo within a year, following a sold-out screening of Emma Rice’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream last July. Capacity is strictly limited and the event is one-screening only.  This Twelfth Nightwas captured live on stage in London in 2017; this represents the first time it will be screened in a cinema anywhere in the world.

Former Globe Artistic Director Emma Rice’s irreverent production is another wild mash-up of theatre, comedy and music, set in 1979, with a heady blend of disco, punk and rock (as well as Scottish folk and tango) performed by a band in the gallery. As in her Bollywood-inspired Midsummer, Rice assembles an eclectic cast, pairing the usual multi-talented Shakespeareans with comic actors and a cabaret star: this time it’s the towering Le Gateau Chocolat in a gold kaftan. Cross-dressing, hijinks and bittersweet hilarity take to the high seas, as Emma Rice transforms Shakespeare’s timeless, soulful and irrepressible comedy.

Twins Sebastian and Viola are shipwrecked on the coast of Illyria – relocated there to the heart of the Scottish Highlands – and are separated, believing each other to be dead. Beside herself with grief, Viola disguises herself as a boy and goes into the service of the Duke Orsino. The Duke, madly in love with the Countess Olivia, sends Viola to woo on his behalf. What could possibly go wrong? Olivia falls in love with the cross-dressed page while Viola falls deep and fast for Orsino. Meanwhile, mischievous servants play painful pranks at each other’s expense. Heady chaos ensues as griefs, loves and deep human confusions collide, but fear not! Sweet resolution wins the day as friends, twins and lovers are reunited.

The screening continues the partnership between the Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre of London, and NapaShakes, a Napa Valley based nonprofit, which has presented the Globe Theatre live on stage in the Napa Valley twice, as well as multiple sold-out seasons of Globe on Screen at the Cameo Cinema. Tickets are $25, on sale at the Cameo Cinema box office and at www.cameocinema.com.

The Winter’s Tale is Shakespeare’s great play of the irrational and inexplicable, illustrating how uncontrollable emotions can range across gender, country, class and age. Its universe is full of monsters, gods and natural disasters with a colossal sweep that takes audiences from the stifling atmosphere of the Sicilian court to the unbuttoned joy of a Bohemian festival. Staged at the beautiful and iconic Globe Theatre in London, this new production is directed by Blanche McIntyre and stars Will Keen (The Crown, Wolf Hall) as Leontes, Priyanga Burford (W1A, Marcella) as Hermione and Annette Badland (EastEnders, Father Brown) as Old Shepherd. A reconstruction of an open-air Elizabethan playhouse on the bank of the River Thames, the Globe Theatre has become a significant part of the national and international theatre landscape, celebrating Shakespeare’s transformative impact on the world. The Winter’s Tale was filmed live at Shakespeare’s Globe on Thursday 4 October 2018.

Director: Blanche McIntyre Cast: Annette Badland, Zora Bishop, Adrian Bower, Priyanga Burford, Becci Gemmell, Will Keen, Norah Lopez-Holden, Luke MacGregor, Jordan Metcalfe, Oliver Ryan, Sirine Saba, Howard Ward, Rose Wardlaw

N/R. Running time: 175 mins (including 15 min interval).

SYNOPSIS: Blanche McIntyre’s critically acclaimed production of Shakespeare’s tragedy-tinged romance is broadcast live from the stage of the historic Shakespeare’s Globe theatre in London. King Leontes of Sicilia entreats his dutiful and pregnant wife, Queen Hermione, to plead with childhood friend King Polixenes of Bohemia to stay a while longer rather than return home to see his son and tend to state affairs. Hermione succeeds and Leontes convinces himself that the queen and Polixenes have been having an affair.

Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre is one of the world’s most revered and resourceful theatre companies, with its iconic open-air London theatre rebuilt nearby the site of Shakespeare’s original playhouse. Globe on Screen, its film initiative, makes live performances from the Globe Theatre available in digitally enhanced HD.

The Cameo Cinemais located at 1340 Main Street in St. Helena. A state-of-the-art intimate jewel, the Cameo is one of the oldest independent single-screen movie theaters in the country, having celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2013.

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM [2016]

Directed by: Emma Rice

‘Gentles, perchance you wonder at this show. But wonder on, till ’truth make all things plain.’

My! The woods outside Athens are a busy place on this magical night! Four runaway lovers find themselves smack bang in the middle of a dispute between the King and Queen of the fairies, and, as if that wasn’t enough, a troupe of amateur actors are trying to rehearse a play. Between these unlikely groups flies Puck, armed only with a wicked sense of humour and a love potion capable of making anyone fall for the first person they set eyes upon. What could possibly go wrong?

Fusing music, dance and some serious comedy, Emma Rice’s first production as Artistic Director brings the Dream crashing into the Globe’s magical setting. Naughty, tender, transgressive and surprising, it promises to be a festival of theatre. Let the joy begin!

MERCHANT OF VENICE:

Jonathan Munby directed this internationally acclaimed productionMerchant of Venice, one of Shakespeare’s most poetically dazzling and morally ambivalent plays, starring the legendary Jonathan Pryce, CBE, as Shylock. A Tony and Olivier award-winning stage and screen actor, Pryce most recently appeared as Cardinal Wolsey in the television adaptation of Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall, and as the High Sparrow in Game of Thrones. His numerous popular film appearances include Pirates of the Caribbean, Glengarry Glen Ross, and Evita; he won applause onstage as the lead in Miss Saigon and My Fair Lady, in addition to his beloved turn as Hamlet at the Royal Court Theatre.

ABOUT THE PLAY:

“I will not hear thee speak; I’ll have my bond.”

Portia, a wealthy heiress of Belmont, is forced to set her suitors a challenge. The winner will win her hand in marriage; the losers will lose her hand and much more. In Venice, the epicentre of consumption, speculation and debt, Bassanio borrows money from his friend Antonio to finance his attempt. Antonio, in turn, takes out a loan from the moneylender Shylock. The loan will be repaid when Antonio’s ships return to the city. But if the ships fail to return, and the money cannot be repaid, Antonio will give to Shylock a pound of his own flesh. And they do fail. And Shylock will have his ‘bond’.

In some of his most highly charged scenes, Shakespeare dramatizes the competing claims of tolerance and intolerance, religious law and civil society, justice and mercy; while in the character of Shylock he created one of the most memorable outsiders in all theatre.

Double Olivier and Tony award winner Jonathan Pryce plays Shylock in his first appearance at Shakespeare’s Globe.

This performance is approximately 2h 45 minutes and has one interval.

MEASURE FOR MEASURE:

Crowd-pleasing former Globe Artistic Director Dominic Dromgoole directed Measure for Measureas his farewell to the Globe after a spectacular tenure helming critically-acclaimed productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Henry V and The Duchess of Malfi (all part of prior Globe on Screen screenings).  This production stars Mariah Gale as Isabella, Dominic Rowan as Duke Vincentio and Kurt Egyiawan as Angelo.

One of Shakespeare’s blackest comedies, the play explores the problematic mechanisms of sexual politics and social justice in a Vienna in which “some rise by sin, and some by virtue fall.” NapaShakes fans saw Sir Derek Jacobi in his first performance of the role of Angelo in the 2016 world premiere of Measure + Dido.

ABOUT THE PLAY:

“The law hath not been dead, though it hath slept.“

Vincentio, Duke of Vienna, disgusted by the immorality in his city, announces his withdrawal from public life and leaves his deputy, the puritanical Angelo, in charge. Angelo, in his zeal for observing the letter of the law, begins a ruthless program to stamp out sexual license, in the course of which he condemns one Claudio to death. Surely Claudio’s virginal sister Isabella, a novice nun seeking mercy for her brother, could not awake the lust of this cold, censorious man?

Injustice, hypocrisy and the challenge of inflexible virtue combine in Measure for Measure, Shakespeare’s most searching exploration of sexual politics and social justice.

This performance is approximately 2h 56 minutes and has one interval.

REVIEWS

★★★★

‘A production that gives us light as well as shade…Dromgoole’s production really sings.’

Time Out

★★★★

‘Rich, messy and human… Mariah Gale gives a performance of delicacy and force as Isabella… As the Duke, Dominic Rowan milks the comedy from the scenes where his character is disguised as a friar, but he also brings a moral intricacy to the role.’

The Stage

★★★★

‘Irrepressively lively… manages to make instantaneous shifts between uproarious bawdy and theatre-hushing seriousness.’

The Independent

★★★★

‘Dominic Dromgoole’s staging finds more broad comedy in this dark, troubling play than you might expect.’

Financial Times

★★★★

‘Dominic Dromgoole shows all his experience in his final production in the Globe’s outdoor space… Mariah Gale is an outstanding Isabella.’

The Sunday Times

‘The beautiful eloquence of the verse, and heartfelt nature of the acting, send unseasonal shivers down the spine.’

The Daily Telegraph

‘Shakespeare without a safety net… It’s noisy, it’s earthy, it’s unruly… Here’s a corking good time, clear enough to make the play count, with a quite astonishing feat of acting at its heart.’

Variety

RICHARD II:

Simon Godwin directed this popular production of Richard II, starring Charles Edwards in the title role. Edwards, perhaps best known to American audiences as Lady Edith Crowley’s disappearing fiancé Michael Gregson in Downton Abbey, most recently starred onstage in Blithe Spirit opposite Angela Lansbury. Olivier-winning actress Sarah Woodward plays the Duchess of York in one of Shakespeare’s most fascinating history plays.

Dazzlingly eloquent and ceremonious, Richard II invests a weak and self-dramatizing man with tragic status and represents Shakespeare’s most searching exploration of the meaning of kingship and the rising powers that can destroy it.

ABOUT THE PLAY:

“Within the hollow crown

That rounds the mortal temples of a king

Keeps death his court.”

Ruling by divine right, but himself ruled by caprice, King Richard exiles Henry Bolingbroke and seizes his father’s vast estates. While Richard is distracted by a rebellion in Ireland, Bolingbroke returns to England, intent on recovering his rightful property and, with the support of his disgruntled peers, perhaps seizing the crown itself.

This performance is approximately 2h 40 minutes and has one interval.

REVIEWS

★★★★

‘Charles Edwards’s excellent Richard…pierces the heart. Recommended.’

The Independent

★★★★

‘[Charles] Edwards is a beautiful fit for the role.’

Financial Times

★★★★

‘a briskly intelligent production.’

The Guardian

★★★★

‘A human and entertaining night of tragedy.’

TITUS

October 16, 2016: Titus Andronicus

Returning to Rome from a war against the Goths, the general Titus Andronicus brings with him the queen Tamora and her three sons as prisoners of war. Titus’ sacrifice of Tamora’s eldest son to appease the ghosts of his dead sons, and his decision to refuse to accept the title of emperor, initiates a terrible cycle of mutilation, rape and murder. And all the while, at the centre of the nightmare, there moves the villainous, self-delighting Aaron.

Grotesquely violent and daringly experimental, Titus was the smash hit of Shakespeare’s early career, and is written with a ghoulish energy he was never to repeat elsewhere. This production revisited Lucy Bailey’s spectacular Globe production of 2006 and caused a stir throughout the UK media with staged violence so realistic that throughout its run the play saw audience members fainting in the stalls. The 2015 cinema release will have audiences on the edges of their seats from start to grisly end.

Runtime 168 mins approx. with 15 minute interval

COMEDYERRORS

September 11, 2016: The Comedy of Errors

Take one pair of estranged twin brothers (both called Antipholus), and one pair of estranged twin servants (both called Dromio), keep them in ignorance of each other and throw them into a city with a reputation for sorcery, and you have all the ingredients for theatrical chaos. One Antipholus is astonished by his foreign hospitality; the other enraged by the hostility of his home town. The Dromios, caught between the two, are soundly beaten for obeying all the wrong orders. Basing his plot on a farce by Plautus, Shakespeare caps the mayhem of his Roman original to build up a hectic tale of violent cross-purposes, furious slapstick and social nightmare.

Comedy of Errors brings the perfect light relief to close an epic season of war and tragedy. This sell-out production employed authentic Renaissance costumes and staging and will have cinema audiences roaring with laughter as it crams in “more hilarious anarchy than you can shake a fish, cat or identity-confused servant at.” (London Theatre Guide).

The Duchess of Malfi

malfi02-767x4681-767x468The widowed Duchess of Malfi longs to marry her lover, the steward Antonio. But her rancorous brothers, Ferdinand and the Cardinal, are implacably opposed to the match. When their spy, Bosola, discovers that the Duchess has secretly married and carries Antonio’s child, they exact a terrible and horrific revenge.

The Duchess of Malfi, featuring Hollywood star Gemma Arterton in the title role, is a thrilling combination of brilliant coups de théâtre, horrific set-pieces and vivid characters, all lit by Webster’s obsessional imagination.

Gemma Arterton returned to The Globe to play the Duchess in this sell-out production. Gemma made her professional stage debut at the Globe in 2007, when she won huge critical acclaim as Rosaline in Love’s Labour’s Lost.

This most intimate Jacobean tragedy proved a truly sensational curtain-raiser for The Globe’s very first season in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. The Globe On Screen production was the first ever theatrical production to be filmed entirely in candlelight – a unique and unmissable event from the Globe’s 2015 season.

When Caesar returns to Rome from the wars a virtual dictator, Brutus and his republican friends resolve that his ambition must be curbed – which in Rome can mean only one thing: the great general must be assassinated. But once the deed is done, the idealistic conspirators must reckon with the forces of a new power bloc, led by Mark Antony and Caesar’s nephew Octavius. When their armies close at Philippi, will Caesar’s ghost be avenged?

Opposing dictatorship and republicanism, private virtue and mob violence, Shakespeare’s tense drama of high politics reveals the emotional currents that flow between men in power with themes that still resonate even today. This sell-out production employed authentic Renaissance costumes and staging, and Dominic Dromgoole’s impassioned interpretation of one of Shakespeare’s classic plays showcased “a rapport between the performers and the audience that feels genuinely magical” (Daily Telegraph).

CLEOAntony & Cleopatra

Cleopatra, the alluring and fascinatingly ambiguous Queen of Egypt, has bewitched the great Mark Antony, soldier, campaigner and now one of the three rulers of the Roman Empire. When Antony quarrels with his fellow leaders and throws in his lot with Cleopatra, his infatuation threatens to split the Empire in two.

The third of the Globe Theatre’s Roman Tragedies, Antony & Cleopatra picks up Antony’s story many years after Julius Caesar. Virtue and vice, transcendent love and realpolitik combine in Shakespeare’s greatest exploration of the conflicting claims of sex and power, all expressed in a tragic poetry of breath-taking beauty and magnificence.  The Globe’s envisioning of this iconic play encapsulates these themes whilst deftly threading a sense of comedy throughout, and Olivier Award-winner Eve Best’s Cleopatra ‘kisses the audience’ (Guardian) with her ‘magnetically humorous’ (Evening Standard) performance.

WINTERThe Winter’s Tale

“Though I am not naturally honest, I am so sometimes by chance…”

by William Shakespeare, Cast includes Judi Dench and Kenneth Branagh

Shakespeare’s timeless tragicomedy of obsession and redemption is reimagined in a new production co-directed by Rob Ashford and Kenneth Branagh, following their triumphant staging of Macbeth in Manchester and Manhattan. Judi Dench plays Paulina, Kenneth Branagh plays Leontes. Kenneth Branagh says: “The Winter’s Tale is a play I have been drawn to through my entire career. Judi Dench has famously been in the play as Hermione and Perdita, but to have her in the company as Paulina and for us to work together on Shakespeare, which we have not done since Coriolanus in Chichester twenty years ago, is very rewarding.

Not Rated (stage violence, not suitable for young children). Running time:  3 hours including 15 min interval.

“Branagh brilliantly shades Leontes’ descent into madness.”

Dench is “as luminous as an angel”

– The Telegraph

★★★★

The Winter’s Tale is possibly Shakespeare’s most perfect play with its rhythm of lost and found – a tarnished fairytale that redeems itself. It’s a play that, when it works, casts a spell like no other, and this production, co-directed by Branagh and Rob Ashford, is magical. It is hard to imagine the play more movingly performed. It’s a gift to eye and heart.

The Guardian

Judi Dench in The Winters Tale is “an actress whose luster transcends the years. […] At a point in life when so many of her generation seem to have left the stage, Ms. Dench transmits a continued devotion to the arena in which she honed her craft, and a hushed audience responds in kind.”

NapaShakes presents Shakespeare’s Globe on Screen: Henry V
Sunday March 22 at 2:30 PM

“We few, we happy few, we band of brothers…” Shakespeare’s masterpiece of the turbulence of war and the arts of peace tells the romantic story of Henry’s campaign to recapture the English possessions in France. But the ambitions of this charismatic king are challenged by a host of vivid characters caught up in the real horrors of war. Henry V, which opened the new Globe with the words ‘O for a muse of fire’, celebrates the power of language to summon into life courts, pubs, ships and battlefields within the Globe’s ‘wooden O’ – and beyond.

(Mother’s Day)

“Kiss me, Kate…” Shakespeare’s most outrageous comedy, The Taming of the Shrew introduces one of theatre’s great screwball double-acts, a couple hell-bent on confusing and outwitting each other right up to the play’s equivocal conclusion. Samantha Spiro stars as cantankerous Kate, capable of knocking a grown man down with her fist. With a stellar supporting cast, the production is a triumph, thanks to its ‘riotous mixture of verbal dexterity and slapstick’ (The Daily Telegraph). Give Mom a theatrical treat for Mother’s Day!

“By the pricking of my thumbs, Something wicked this way comes…” When three witches tell Macbeth that he is destined to occupy the throne of Scotland, he and his wife choose to become the instruments of their fate and to kill the first man standing in their path, the virtuous King Duncan. But to maintain his position, Macbeth must keep on killing – first Banquo, his old comrade-in-arms; then, as the atmosphere of guilt and paranoia thickens, anyone who seems to threaten his tyrant’s crown. From its mesmerizing first moments to the last fulfillment of the witches’ prophecy, Shakespeare’s gripping account of the profoundest engagement with the forces of evil enthralls the imagination.
