On March 10, 2019 at 1 pm, NapaShakes will present another world-premiere cinema screening from London’s Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre: Emma Rice’s music-filled production of Twelfth Night. The screening will be presented at St Helena’s historic Cameo Cinema in digital HD and Dolby Atmos surround sound, recreating the experience of being a Groundling in the “Wooden O” of Shakespeare’s Globe. This is the second premiere cinema screening from the Globe that NapaShakes has presented at the Cameo within a year, following a sold-out screening of Emma Rice’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream last July. Capacity is strictly limited and the event is one-screening only.  This Twelfth Nightwas captured live on stage in London in 2017; this represents the first time it will be screened in a cinema anywhere in the world.

Former Globe Artistic Director Emma Rice’s irreverent production is another wild mash-up of theatre, comedy and music, set in 1979, with a heady blend of disco, punk and rock (as well as Scottish folk and tango) performed by a band in the gallery. As in her Bollywood-inspired Midsummer, Rice assembles an eclectic cast, pairing the usual multi-talented Shakespeareans with comic actors and a cabaret star: this time it’s the towering Le Gateau Chocolat in a gold kaftan. Cross-dressing, hijinks and bittersweet hilarity take to the high seas, as Emma Rice transforms Shakespeare’s timeless, soulful and irrepressible comedy.

Twins Sebastian and Viola are shipwrecked on the coast of Illyria – relocated there to the heart of the Scottish Highlands – and are separated, believing each other to be dead. Beside herself with grief, Viola disguises herself as a boy and goes into the service of the Duke Orsino. The Duke, madly in love with the Countess Olivia, sends Viola to woo on his behalf. What could possibly go wrong? Olivia falls in love with the cross-dressed page while Viola falls deep and fast for Orsino. Meanwhile, mischievous servants play painful pranks at each other’s expense. Heady chaos ensues as griefs, loves and deep human confusions collide, but fear not! Sweet resolution wins the day as friends, twins and lovers are reunited.

The screening continues the partnership between the Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre of London, and NapaShakes, a Napa Valley based nonprofit, which has presented the Globe Theatre live on stage in the Napa Valley twice, as well as multiple sold-out seasons of Globe on Screen at the Cameo Cinema. The Winter’s Tale is Shakespeare’s great play of the irrational and inexplicable, illustrating how uncontrollable emotions can range across gender, country, class and age. Its universe is full of monsters, gods and natural disasters with a colossal sweep that takes audiences from the stifling atmosphere of the Sicilian court to the unbuttoned joy of a Bohemian festival. My! The woods outside Athens are a busy place on this magical night! Four runaway lovers find themselves smack bang in the middle of a dispute between the King and Queen of the fairies, and, as if that wasn’t enough, a troupe of amateur actors are trying to rehearse a play. Between these unlikely groups flies Puck, armed only with a wicked sense of humour and a love potion capable of making anyone fall for the first person they set eyes upon. What could possibly go wrong?

Fusing music, dance and some serious comedy, Emma Rice’s first production as Artistic Director brings the Dream crashing into the Globe’s magical setting. Naughty, tender, transgressive and surprising, it promises to be a festival of theatre. Let the joy begin!

Jonathan Munby directed this internationally acclaimed productionMerchant of Venice, one of Shakespeare’s most poetically dazzling and morally ambivalent plays, starring the legendary Jonathan Pryce, CBE, as Shylock. A Tony and Olivier award-winning stage and screen actor, Pryce most recently appeared as Cardinal Wolsey in the television adaptation of Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall, and as the High Sparrow in Game of Thrones. His numerous popular film appearances include Pirates of the Caribbean, Glengarry Glen Ross, and Evita; he won applause onstage as the lead in Miss Saigon and My Fair Lady, in addition to his beloved turn as Hamlet at the Royal Court Theatre.

ABOUT THE PLAY:

“I will not hear thee speak; I’ll have my bond.”

Portia, a wealthy heiress of Belmont, is forced to set her suitors a challenge. The winner will win her hand in marriage; the losers will lose her hand and much more. In Venice, the epicentre of consumption, speculation and debt, Bassanio borrows money from his friend Antonio to finance his attempt. Antonio, in turn, takes out a loan from the moneylender Shylock. The loan will be repaid when Antonio’s ships return to the city. But if the ships fail to return, and the money cannot be repaid, Antonio will give to Shylock a pound of his own flesh. And they do fail. And Shylock will have his ‘bond’.

In some of his most highly charged scenes, Shakespeare dramatizes the competing claims of tolerance and intolerance, religious law and civil society, justice and mercy; while in the character of Shylock he created one of the most memorable outsiders in all theatre.

Double Olivier and Tony award winner Jonathan Pryce plays Shylock in his first appearance at Shakespeare’s Globe.

Crowd-pleasing former Globe Artistic Director Dominic Dromgoole directed Measure for Measureas his farewell to the Globe after a spectacular tenure helming critically-acclaimed productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Henry V and The Duchess of Malfi (all part of prior Globe on Screen screenings).  This production stars Mariah Gale as Isabella, Dominic Rowan as Duke Vincentio and Kurt Egyiawan as Angelo.

One of Shakespeare’s blackest comedies, the play explores the problematic mechanisms of sexual politics and social justice in a Vienna in which “some rise by sin, and some by virtue fall.” NapaShakes fans saw Sir Derek Jacobi in his first performance of the role of Angelo in the 2016 world premiere of Measure + Dido.

Vincentio, Duke of Vienna, disgusted by the immorality in his city, announces his withdrawal from public life and leaves his deputy, the puritanical Angelo, in charge. Angelo, in his zeal for observing the letter of the law, begins a ruthless program to stamp out sexual license, in the course of which he condemns one Claudio to death. Surely Claudio’s virginal sister Isabella, a novice nun seeking mercy for her brother, could not awake the lust of this cold, censorious man?

Injustice, hypocrisy and the challenge of inflexible virtue combine in Measure for Measure, Shakespeare’s most searching exploration of sexual politics and social justice.

Simon Godwin directed this popular production of Richard II, starring Charles Edwards in the title role. Edwards, perhaps best known to American audiences as Lady Edith Crowley’s disappearing fiancé Michael Gregson in Downton Abbey, most recently starred onstage in Blithe Spirit opposite Angela Lansbury. Olivier-winning actress Sarah Woodward plays the Duchess of York in one of Shakespeare’s most fascinating history plays.

Dazzlingly eloquent and ceremonious, Richard II invests a weak and self-dramatizing man with tragic status and represents Shakespeare’s most searching exploration of the meaning of kingship and the rising powers that can destroy it.

Ruling by divine right, but himself ruled by caprice, King Richard exiles Henry Bolingbroke and seizes his father’s vast estates. October 16, 2016: Titus Andronicus

Returning to Rome from a war against the Goths, the general Titus Andronicus brings with him the queen Tamora and her three sons as prisoners of war. Titus’ sacrifice of Tamora’s eldest son to appease the ghosts of his dead sons, and his decision to refuse to accept the title of emperor, initiates a terrible cycle of mutilation, rape and murder. And all the while, at the centre of the nightmare, there moves the villainous, self-delighting Aaron.

Grotesquely violent and daringly experimental, Titus was the smash hit of Shakespeare’s early career, and is written with a ghoulish energy he was never to repeat elsewhere. This production revisited Lucy Bailey’s spectacular Globe production of 2006 and caused a stir throughout the UK media with staged violence so realistic that throughout its run the play saw audience members fainting in the stalls. The 2015 cinema release will have audiences on the edges of their seats from start to grisly end.

September 11, 2016: The Comedy of Errors

Take one pair of estranged twin brothers (both called Antipholus), and one pair of estranged twin servants (both called Dromio), keep them in ignorance of each other and throw them into a city with a reputation for sorcery, and you have all the ingredients for theatrical chaos. One Antipholus is astonished by his foreign hospitality; the other enraged by the hostility of his home town. The Dromios, caught between the two, are soundly beaten for obeying all the wrong orders. Basing his plot on a farce by Plautus, Shakespeare caps the mayhem of his Roman original to build up a hectic tale of violent cross-purposes, furious slapstick and social nightmare.

Comedy of Errors brings the perfect light relief to close an epic season of war and tragedy. This sell-out production employed authentic Renaissance costumes and staging and will have cinema audiences roaring with laughter as it crams in “more hilarious anarchy than you can shake a fish, cat or identity-confused servant at.” (London Theatre Guide).

The Duchess of Malfi, featuring Hollywood star Gemma Arterton in the title role, is a thrilling combination of brilliant coups de théâtre, horrific set-pieces and vivid characters, all lit by Webster’s obsessional imagination.

Gemma Arterton returned to The Globe to play the Duchess in this sell-out production. Gemma made her professional stage debut at the Globe in 2007, when she won huge critical acclaim as Rosaline in Love’s Labour’s Lost.

When Caesar returns to Rome from the wars a virtual dictator, Brutus and his republican friends resolve that his ambition must be curbed – which in Rome can mean only one thing: the great general must be assassinated.
