NapaShakes presents
a World Premiere Cinema Screening
from London’s Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre

William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night directed by Emma Rice
At the Cameo Cinema in St. Helena
March 10, 2019 at 1 pm

Former Globe Artistic Director Emma Rice’s irreverent production is another wild mash-up of theatre, comedy and music, set in 1979, with a heady blend of disco, punk and rock (as well as Scottish folk and tango) performed by a band in the gallery. As in her Bollywood-inspired Midsummer, Rice assembles an eclectic cast, pairing the usual multi-talented Shakespeareans with comic actors and a cabaret star: this time it’s the towering Le Gateau Chocolat in a gold kaftan. Cross-dressing, hijinks and bittersweet hilarity take to the high seas, as Emma Rice transforms Shakespeare’s timeless, soulful and irrepressible comedy. (Running time approx. 148 mins with 20 min interval)

Tickets are $25, at the Cameo Box Office: www.cameocinema.com

NapaShakes presents The world-premiere cinema screening from London’s Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dreamdirected by Emma Rice
– plus- Bollywood Disco Celebration with Dinner, Drinks & Disco
at the Cameo Cinema & Caldwell-Snyder Gallery in St. Helena
July 28, 2018 at 5 pm

On July 28, 2018 NapaShakes invites audiences to “Rock the Ground” when it presents the world-premiere cinema screening of Emma Rice’s crowd-pleasing production from London’s Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The screening will be followed by a Bollywood Disco Celebrationto benefit NapaShakes. Tickets are $65, including the screening and celebration. The screening runs 2 hours and 52 minutes, including a 15-minute interval. The evening is most appropriate for age 21 and older.

The screening starts at The Cameo Cinema on July 28, 2018 at 5 pm, followed by an unabashedly theatrical celebration including Dinner, Drinks and Disco, plus someDreamy performance art, at the Caldwell-Snyder Gallery in St. Helena. Capacity is strictly limited and the event is one-night only; guests are encouraged to wear their Bollywood or Disco finest. This Midsummer Night’s Dreamwas captured live on stage and screened online by the BBC; this represents the first time it has been screened in a cinema anywhere in the world.

Former Globe Artistic Director Emma Rice’s Bollywood-inspired production is a wild mash-up of theatre, comedy and music which sold-out every performance at London’s Globe Theatre, and which shocked Shakespeare traditionalists by adding amplified music (including an electric sitar) as well as artificial lighting: a “Rock the Ground” neon sign (plus a disco ball) to the Globe’s formerly staid stage. In addition to Indian influences, the production includes a touch of David Bowie, George Formby and some original songs, and a wildly uninhibited performance by the international cabaret star Meow Meow as Tatiana. Determinedly un-traditional in her approach, the director cleverly replaces the female character Helena with a male character: Helenus, in this crowd-pleasing gender and genre-bending production aimed at making Shakespeare approachable, relatable, and – above all – raucous good fun.

The screening and celebration mark the latest chapter in the partnership between the Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre of London, and NapaShakes, a Napa Valley based nonprofit, which has presented the Globe Theatre live in performance twice on stage, as well as multiple sold-out seasons of Globe on Screenat the Cameo Cinema. Proceeds from the evening will benefit NapaShakes arts and education program and the return of a new season of Globe on Screen presented by NapaShakes at the Cameo. The Globe is expected to return live in 2019.

Shakespeare’s Globe Theatreis one of the world’s most revered and resourceful theatre companies, with its iconic open-air London theatre rebuilt nearby the site of Shakespeare’s original playhouse. NapaShakes celebrates Shakespeare’s 400th Anniversary with New York’s acclaimed Fiasco Theater in CYMBELINE

A trunk becomes a ship. A sheet becomes a sail. Poisoning, beheading, cross-dressing, and betrayal become fresh and frisky thanks to New York’s acclaimed Fiasco Theater’s inventive production of William Shakespeare’s epic comedic romance Cymbeline.

Set in Ancient Britain during the Roman invasion, Cymbeline tells of a beautiful princess separated from her beloved, the cruel stepmother who tries to foil her, a credulous husband duped by an adversary, and an exiled nobleman who kidnaps a king’s sons. A young ensemble of six versatile actors resolves the twisted fates of 14 characters at lightning-speed, with live music from a cappella to bluegrass.

A sold-out smash in New York, don’t miss this exclusive West Coast engagement of what The New York Times’ Ben Brantley called “The most truly enchanting Cymbeline I’ve seen.”
